About this tour

Explore the Majesty of Lalbagh Fort in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Lalbagh Fort, also known as Fort Aurangabad, is one of the most iconic historical landmarks in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Located in the heart of the old city, this unfinished Mughal fort complex offers a glimpse into the rich history, architecture, and cultural heritage of the Mughal Empire in Bengal. Lalbagh, meaning “Red Garden,” reflects the reddish-pink hues found in the fort’s architecture and surroundings, a distinct feature of classic Mughal design.

Construction of Lalbagh Fort began in 1678 under the rule of Prince Muhammad Azam, the son of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. He was appointed as the governor of Bengal and laid the foundation for the fort originally named Fort Aurangabad. However, the project was left incomplete when Prince Azam was recalled to Delhi. Later, Nawab Shaista Khan took over the administration of Bengal, but the death of his daughter, Pari Bibi, within the fort grounds led to the belief that the fort was unlucky. As a result, construction was halted and never resumed.

Today, Lalbagh Fort stands as a majestic symbol of Mughal architecture and historical legacy. The complex includes several beautifully preserved structures, including the Tomb of Pari Bibi, the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), and the three-domed Lalbagh Mosque. The Tomb of Pari Bibi is particularly notable for its white marble design, intricate pietra dura (stone inlay) work, and octagonal layout. The palace and mosque showcase traditional Mughal elements like arched gateways, ornate plasterwork, and lush gardens.

Visitors to Lalbagh Fort are often captivated by its elegant blend of Persian and indigenous Bengali styles. The layout of the fort, surrounded by thick walls and bastions, was meant to reflect the grandeur and authority of Mughal power. Though unfinished, the site remains a popular tourist destination and a beloved piece of Dhaka’s heritage.

Managed by the Bangladesh Department of Archaeology, Lalbagh Fort is open to the public and serves as a top attraction for both local and international tourists. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, architecture lover, or casual visitor, a trip to Lalbagh Fort offers a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the city, while also connecting you to the glorious past of Mughal Bengal.

If you’re exploring Dhaka, don’t miss the chance to visit Lalbagh Fort—a timeless monument that narrates stories of love, power, tragedy, and unfinished dreams. Its well-preserved gardens, historic significance, and detailed craftsmanship make it one of the most beautiful historical sites in Bangladesh.
